Welcome to our farm and visit our pigpens. Most or all of you have tasted pork, and you might be interested in the pig that provides us with the meat.
    The pig is an animal that first lived in many parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa. Scientists have discovered the remains of huge pigs that lived more than a million years ago and they believe that the Chinese people have raised pigs for many thousands of years. Grown pigs are called hogs or swine, a female pig is called a sow, and a male pig is called a boar.
    The pig is not a very handsome animal, as you can see, probably because it has such a large mid fat body but very short legs. Some pigs are white, and others are black with white spots, and others are a reddish-brown color.
    The wild pigs are fierce animals. Some pigs, such as the giant forest hog of Africa, are almost three feet high and weigh more than 250 pounds. Other pigs, such as the pygmy hog of India, weigh about, twelve pounds. Many pigs have tusks like elephants.
    Pigs are raised in many parts of the world because they are valuable animals that people use in many ways. Farmers have developed new kinds of pigs that grow quickly and are very healthy. The Poland China pig, the color of it is black with white markings, is a popular breed in the United States. The males can weigh as much as about a thousand pounds and the females weigh about eight hundred pounds.
    Pigs are very greedy animals and they eat great quantities of corn and other crops. They are not very particular about what they eat and will eat almost anything they can find, including small animals like rats and snakes. For this reason people say that a greedy person "eats like a pig".
