I: Have they got any conclusion as to how people should interact with one another?
W: Yes. There exist in people’s consciousness rules, or imagined models of conduct, that guide and control people’s behavior. Social norms, therefore, are the part of culture learned by all members of a society. Of course, laws enforced by governments are one kind of social norm but by no means the only kind. Indeed, etiquette, rituals, and fashion are also called norms but are not embodied in legal statutes.
I: So people should conform to norms.
W: It’s true in a sense. But not all norms apply to every member of society because individuals differ in the parts, or the roles, that they play in everyday life. When these different parts become expectations to which people feel an obligation to conform, they are called social roles. Any recurring pattern of interaction among individuals playing different roles may be said to possess or to constitute a social structure. One may therefore speak of the social structure of the American middle-class family, of General Motors or Harvard University, or of a juvenile gang. Or it may even be American society as a whole. However, many of the major subfields of sociology involve the naming of a recognized area of human activity receded by the phrase "the society of". Established fields of teaching and research include sociologies of politics, law, religion or education.
I: What else do sociologists study besides human relationship?
W: They also study some social phenomena that are not the subjects of any other scholarly discipline. These include marriage and family; crime and deviance and social inequality and stratification. Criminology, the study of crime, in particular, has become virtually an autonomous specialty within sociology, especially in the United States. It is mainly concerned with the study of deviant behavior, including those not involving violations of the law.
I: Right.
W: A newer interdisciplinary subfield is sociobiology. It investigates the causal relations between the human genetic constitution and social behavior.
I: My last question is how do sociologists conduct their research?
W : They make use of nearly all the methods used in the other social sciences and the humanities, from advanced mathematical statistics to the interpretation of texts. Quantitative methods, increasingly refined and adapted to computer technology, continue to play a central role in the discipline, tending to predominate, at least in the United States, in the research reported in sociology journals.
