You will read a short passage, listen to a talk, and answer a question about them. After you hear the question, you will have 30 seconds to prepare a response and 60 seconds to record the response.
Now read the passage about how parents help their children develop frustration tolerance. You will have 45 seconds to read the passage. Begin reading now.
Frustration Tolerance
When young children are not able to accomplish their goals, they may become frustrated and act inappropriately. However, as children mature, they can learn to manage or tolerate frustration. The development of frustration tolerance allows children to continue to work toward completing tasks, even when their initial attempts are unsuccessful. Parents can help their children develop frustration tolerance by deliberately restricting their own responses to their children’s demands for help. By gradually increasing their response time, parents can teach children to manage their frustration while they keep trying to accomplish their goals, despite any difficulties or setbacks that they may encounter.
Now listen to part of a lecture in a psychology class.
Using the example from the lecture, explain how parents can help their children develop frustration tolerance.

OK, so I’ve got a good example of this. When my son was young—three or four years old, I bought him some wooden blocks to play with so that he could build things with them. And he wanted to stack all of them up——build a tower with the blocks by stacking them all one on top of another. So at first he started stacking the blocks, but after he started, they fell over and it made him mad. He started throwing the blocks around and crying and he called for me to come and help him build the tower, so I came over right away and helped him stack up the blocks. Everyday my son would try again at building the tower, but each day when the blocks fell over and he called me to help him, rather than going to help him right away when he called, I waited a few minutes longer before going to help him. Everyday I’d wait a few minutes longer than I’d waited the day before. As a result of this, my son would just start trying to stack the blocks again himself, rather than waiting for me. He’d keep trying himself until finally, after a couple of weeks, he managed to stack all the blocks, build a whole tower with them, completely on his own without my help.

As children grow up, they learn to deal with and tolerate their frustrations. With the ability of frustration tolerance, children are capable of finishing their tasks despite their initial failures. Parents can help children build up this ability by responding more and more slowly to their kids’ demands for help. The lecturer uses her own story as an example. The lecturer once bought her son some wooden blocks, with which he tried to build a tower by stacking up all of them. When the blocks fell down before completion, he got all freaked out and asked the lecturer for help. The lecturer would always come and help him out but she intentionally increased her response time. By that I mean, she would wait a bit longer than she’d waited the day before to come to his rescue. As a result, the kid gradually learned to stack the blocks again without any help and finally completed the tower all by himself.
