Anyway, I heard her when she was 15, singing the【B4】______. And I【B5】______ her. I said, "One day I’m going to have a band, and you’re going to sing in it." And she said, "Yeah, that’ll be the day."
When I was in Boston around 1935, I came down to New York and I【B6】______ her. She couldn’t believe it. A【B7】______ girl in a white band? I said, "Come on, we’re gonna try it." We went down south, and on the way she was afraid. She said, "What am I gonna do?" I said, "We’re gonna try it. I’m scared, too." So we played in some little dance hall and some【B8】______ park, and after her first couple of songs, they accepted her immediately.【B9】______. He didn’t mean it badly. That was his designation for a black woman.【B10】______. I put my hand on her and said, "Calm down." So that was the end of that. Had to push her out.【B11】______.
