The International Fund for Agricultural Development reported Monday that the overall rate of extreme poverty in rural areas has fallen from 48 percent to 34 percent in the past decade — due largely to the progress in China, where the economy has boomed. It said in sub-Saharan Africa, however, the numbers of rural poor have risen from 268 million to 306 million in the same time. The U.N. report said there was just a slight decrease in the rural poverty rate in South Asia, where some 500 million people in rural areas are still considered extremely poor.
