A I like week-long holidays, and I’m always expecting them. It’s so tiresome to study every day, and the weekend is so short for me to relax. In the weekend, there are also a lot of things I have to do such as my paper and social work. But in week-long holidays, I have so much time. I can do everything I’m interested in. B Yes, I agree with you. You can relax in the week-long holidays; you can also have more time to study. I usually make use of a week-long holiday to review my lessons or practice my English. A I prefer week-long holidays, but I don’t like to study in these days. Do you think it’s tiring to continue to study in the holidays? B Everybody would rather not study in weekend holidays, I think. It’s a god-given opportunity to rest. However, for the student whose family is not very rich, I think week-long holidays are negative. A Why? On a holiday, people can take part in some leisure activities to relax from tiresome study and work. As a student, I can learn much in the holidays. As a worker, I can regain my energy in holidays. Holidays make students and workers more energetic, so that they can study or work more efficiently. But if there are too many holidays, people would be accustomed to live without the pressure of work or study, and they may not concentrate themselves on study or work. They may keep thinking about how to spend the next holiday. So, I think the number of the holidays should be reasonable, and we should keep a balance between holidays and work. B What do you think of our government’s decision to lengthen certain holidays? A I think the most important reason is that the government wants to gain "Holiday Economy". The lengthy holidays can bring about an unexpected great travel craze and brisk economic activities. It can add fuel to the Chinese economy. Firstly, tourism-based "Holiday Economy" will raise consumption and spending, and therefore, help to spur domestic demand. In addition, it benefits tourism, transportation, catering, hotels and service industries and enables them to thrive during holidays, which in turn adds fuel to the overall economic growth. What’s more, through lengthening certain holidays, people have more time to do what they like to do. They can spend the holiday traveling, going shopping, visiting friends, families or if they like, they can take some courses they are interested in. Anyway, more spare time gives people a better opportunity to enjoy life. A Do you think week-long holidays will increase pressure on transportation? Why/ why not? B Yes, of course. In China, the most popular way is to travel in the week-long holiday. People go to big cities or some beautiful places by plane, train, bus and so on. So, the train is so crowded that it’s very difficult to buy a train ticket, and the bus is also very crowded. There are so many buses and cars in the street. The traffic is really so heavy. In the streets, in the parks, you can see many tourists there. So, in the week-long holidays like May Day, I’d rather stay in my dormitory.
