Bank of America was once the nation’s biggest banking organization. At its peak, the bank even had more branches in California than the US Postal Service. The bank was also a highly profitable enterprise. But since 1980,its earnings have been down or fiat.
Some of Bank of America’s glory seems to be taken over by the Citibank, its long-term competitor. Thanks to aggressive growth policies,Citibank has also been growing its assets and profits at a fast pace. And now Citibank is trying to enter new markets, including California where Bank of America gained its success.
The bad times Bank of America is currently facing are partly the result of the good times it has enjoyed earlier.Operating in a large and populous state of California as well as in regulated banking environment,Bank of America thrived(兴盛).In the regulated banking environment, banks could not compete by offering higher returns to depositors,SO banks competed by providing convenient services. With a branch at every crossroads,Bank of America was able to occupy 40 percent of the California deposit market.
The progressive deregulation forced Bank of America to fight for customers by offering them competitive rates. But how could this over-burdened organization offer rates as attractive as its competitors?Expending branches was once the most important strategy in the minds of Bank of America’s
policymakers, but now they have to consider cutbacks. It is not easy, because large scales of cutbacks and layoffs would intensify the morale(士气)problem that already threatens the bank.
请回答下列问题。
Which of the following was NOT the reason for which Bank of America thrived?
选项
A、It operated in California,a large state with a large population.
B、The banking environment was regulated by the government.
C、It attracted more deposits by offering higher rates.
D、It had a large number of branches.
答案
C
解析
A、B、D三项都可在第三段中直接看出或推出,而根据“In the regulated banking environment, banks could not compete by offering higher returns todepositors”可见C项有较高的存款利率是不可能的。
