People Are Unsure About "Virtual" Doctor Visits
Being able to find high quality health care at an affordable price is an issue in many countries. In the United States, Walmart, a large chain store, is trying to help. It is offering something new to its employees: cutting the cost of a doctor’s appointment to only $4. The catch is that the patient and doctor must meet electronically—over the Internet. This online service is called " telemedicine".
Thanks to telemedicine, people can talk with medical experts from the privacy of their own homes. Many in the U. S. health care industry see this as a good time to teach people how telemedicine services can help them. Supporters say online visits make it easier for patients to see an expert or quickly find help for problems considered non-emergencies.
Still, many people do not use telemedicine. Compared with seeing a real doctor in person, some people may think the quality of telemedicine is not as good. Parents, for example, may feel they are not giving then-child the best care if they use a virtual doctor appointment. Older adults may also not want to see a doctor online. One reason may be that older people may look forward to their in-person doctor appointments. "Going to the doctor’s office is a big event" in the lives of many older people. It is something they look forward to.
Another reason some adults may not use telemedicine services is trust. Tom Hill, age 66, has no plans to ever use telemedicine. He does not buy anything online, let alone do something as personal as seeing a doctor. He says, for him, it is important to look his doctor in the eye and shake hands.

My View on Telemedicine Recently, a new terminology, telemedicine, has been often mentioned, whose definition is to implement diagnoses with the assistance of the Internet as well as other tools like cameras and recording equipment. It is no exaggeration to say that such mode of medical service has swept the world and drawn public attention, with people standing on both sides. Some are for it due to its quick and convenient service, while others, especially the old, cannot accept this treatment model considering the unreliability of diagnosis. It is my contention that telemedicine may do more good than harm to both patients and society. For one thing, from the standpoint of patients, not only does telemedicine break down the barriers of time and space for diagnosis, avoiding the long-distance travel between home and hospital as well as long queues in the hospital, but also proves to reduce the cost of health care and increase efficiency. For another thing, from the perspective of society, telemedicine enables rural patients to get high-quality treatments just as people living in urban areas have, thus bridging the gap between urban areas and rural areas and improving the equity among regions. To sum up, I always keep the faith that " What exists is reasonable. " Although we cannot deny that telemedicine needs continuous improvement, its positive effects on both patients and society are prominent, and people’s dependence on its higher quality treatment is an irreversible trend. Therefore, it is high time for us to take an all-side perspective of telemedicine instead of keeping hammering away at its drawbacks.
