The question " Is mankind itself the greatest threat to mankind?" can be answered from many dimensions, depending on each individual’s point of view. Nuclear weapons, global warming, war, or overpopulation—all can be reasonable and explicable. After having reflected on the question, I think the greatest threat to mankind that would top my list is actually mankind itself. Firstly, as I said, while each factor listed above, together with many others that haven’t been mentioned, can be understandably thought to be the greatest threat to mankind, mankind is the only one that can be decisively related and concluded as the creator of all these possible threats. Human beings are always trying to change the great nature to meet their own selfish interests, while ignoring the sustainable development of the whole planet, which naturally results in various problems and disasters. For example, environmental problems like global warming, are becoming more and more serious every day. Furthermore, as the society is developing fast, people are facing more temptation. Lust for pleasure and luxuries causes people to commit crimes, and greed for power and resources motivates countries to launch wars. If the lust and greed can’t be satisfied, people sometimes abandon themselves to drugs like heroin or MDMA, etc. Last but not least, with the development of modern science and technology, there seems to be more confusion for mankind than ever before. Our life is filled with various fake and forged commodities. Things like rice and water, which are the basic necessities for our survival, now cause a lot of worries and concerns. We have become the victim of our own sin and crime. All in all, we don’t really know how many threats we are facing now and will face in the future. It is understandable that these threats only come from the insatiable human greed. But the fact is that they exist everywhere, even in our daily needs for survival. Wars and diseases make people suffer and die. Money and profits drive people crazy and insane. All these come from the selfish human nature. It is exactly as the famous thinker once said, "The greatest threat to mankind is mankind itself!"
