问题 Saint Vincent’s University is one of a number of schools getting tough on plagiarism. "Copying information directly from other sources, whether they be books, the Internet, or other students, has never been acceptable, and now we’re using technology to fight it," says Margaret Withers, Director of Student Services at Saint Vincent’s. Fit-Right is the new technology.
"Fit-Right is a powerful new software tool that compares written text to information on the Internet as well as to work by other students." The program does this by searching for common phrases and sentences. Each student must log into the program with their university I.D., and then submit their paper. After Fit-Right runs a check, a result is given, but not to the student. Ms. Withers explains. "If the program comes back with a negative result, then that student’s I.D. and paper are sent directly to their professor. Whatever happens next will be up to the professor."
Students at Saint Vincent’s are reacting differently to the new system. Most support the technology and think that a good student has nothing to fear. Others feel that it’s just another case of being examined much too closely.
