It happened on my business trip to Beijing for an education forum. I was then going with two foreign professors from Switzerland who were invited to the forum as guest lecturers. After work, I took them to Houhai for dinner. It was a famous tourist spot packed with all kinds of restaurants and bars. Because it was their first trip to China, I introduced them to some traditional Chinese food. However, it was quite embarrassed when I found that they were vegetarians. So the famous roasted Peking duck must be off the menu. Luckily, they said yes to seafood. After careful consideration, we ordered sweet and sour fish, stir-fried assorted vegetables and spicy tofu. Although they couldn’t represent the typical Beying cuisine, my guests enjoyed the meal very much. They praised Chinese food for its good taste and exquisite presentation. It was an unforgettable meal because it was the first time I took on the role of a Chinese host and cultural ambassador. During dinner, I taught my Swiss friends how to use chopsticks, explained to them how tea was served, and introduced the Eight Cuisines of China. My guests were amazed by the diverse and profound Chinese cuisine culture. Climate, history and agriculture affect how people cook and eat. Considering China’s size and history, it’s no wonder why food culture varies drastically in different parts of China. Thanks to that meal, I became more proud of and interested in my homeland’s culture.
