E Which way of communication do you commonly use to contact your friends? A Generally speaking, I have different ways of communication depending on different things and time. At the beginning of my college I kept up correspondence with my friends, especially with those who didn’t live in the same cities or provinces. For friends that stayed in the same city, I usually phoned them. Sometimes I wrote to them. You know, the cost of long distance calls was so high that I couldn’t afford it. Three years ago, I had more ways to choose. Now I prefer to communicate with them on the computer because we all have our own computers. Of course I’d like to use the most efficient way to communicate with them no matter how far away they live if there is something important or urgent to tell them. E Can you list some means of communication? A Ok, I think the most common means of communication is the telephone. But we have other traditional ways of communication, for example, write letters, send telegrams and talk face to face. It is surveyed that nowadays most households in the city owe at least one telephone, through which people can easily talk to each other. Letters was used most often by those who live in the countryside where phones are not available yet. But nowadays phones are very popular in the countryside that even people over there write less letters to each other. Recently many people have found a new way: sending short letters by mobile-phone. With the popularity of computers, more and more people now start to send e-mails to each other, but not everyone can afford to buy a computer. College students and employees in the city often use this way. E As a special group, how do college school students contact their family members and friends? A I don’t know how to communicate with my family members because I have nothing to say and phone them only one a year to say please remit me some money (laugh). As far as my classmates are concerned, most students send e-mails to communicate. This can be proven by their opening e-mail boxes several times ever-y day. But on some occasions, such as one week before New Year’s Day, there will be many letters flying to our class just like snowflake from all over the nation. You can see lots of students standing in a long queue for stamps. Sometimes you can also see many students use public telephones but most of them talk on the phone to their friends who just live in the same city or in the same school. E Do you think modern communication make people closer? B Firstly, modern traffic tools let people walk farther than whenever. The whole earth is increasingly becoming a village, correspondingly, modern communication make people closer. Wherever you are, if you can login web, you will be one of the member in information express way. Several hundred years ago people communicated by horse. In the 20th century, people communicate with phone, tele-gram, which draw the space between people nearer, and at 21st century, computer integrates with communication technology, and greatly effect our life, which make us closer. E Could you tell us what influence computer brings to communication? B Several decades ago, people communicated with phones. At that time phones transfered information by ways of stimulation signal. It’s hard to deal with and transfer large amounts of stimulation signals, especially audio and video which constitute enormous signals. After the chip was invented, the velocity of dealing with information has greatly increased, stimulation signals are turned to digital signals and transfered by the web, which make people see the picture when listening to the voice. So it can be said computer, combined with communication brings a revolution to communication technology. We have come to feel its influence and this influence will continue. E Which factors students now usually consider when choosing communication ways? B Generally speaking, cost is the first factor, after all we are now students and have no income. Secondly the quality of call must also be take account of. There are many IP phones now, but among them some have poor quality, so I won’t choose it although it’s cheaper than common phones. Of course concrete problem concrete analysis, if encountering something urgent, you must choose a way available immediately. E Do you think telephone communication will increasingly replace letters in the future? And why? B In my opinion, although telephone communication is quite popular in China, it won’t take the place of letters. First of all, telephones are still not available in many rural or mountainous areas. The only way for them to communicate with the outside world is by means of writing and receiving letters. Second, they want to avoid long distance calls. And most important of all, people, particularly lovers, can express delicate feelings in letters. Of course, there are even more advantages to writing a letter, for example, people can keep their letters as long as they like and reread them when they get old, which can remind them of past times. And last but most important, is formal contract which must be written on paper, not by telephone. So, that’s why I don’t think the telephone will replace the letter.
