Notice of New Graduation Requirement
Please note the new graduation requirement that will take effect next year. Starting in September, all students must complete a quarter-long internship in their major field of study. Whereas in the past the internship requirement applied only to business majors, it now applies to students in all departments. Only in cases where a student has been accepted into a graduate program by December 1 will the requirement be waived. Please note that many year-long courses in the social sciences and the performing arts already have an experiential learning option that will provide enough hours of work experience to fulfill the internship requirement.
Now cover the passage and listen to the conversation. You may take notes, and you may use your notes to help you answer the question. After you hear the question, begin preparing your response. You may look at the question, but NOT at the passage. You have 30 seconds to prepare your response and 60 seconds to speak.
The woman expresses her opinion about the new graduation requirement. State her opinion, and explain the reasons she gives for holding that opinion.

Now listen to two students as they discuss the new graduation requirement.
M: Hey, I just found out about the new internship requirement.
W: So did I. It’s not a bad idea, actually. It will be very useful for me because I’m in arts management, and I’d hoped to get an internship in my final year anyway. For me, an internship is really important. Not only will it give me valuable training, but it will also give me an advantage when I look for a job after graduation. I’ll have work experience that will look very nice on my resume.
M: I see what you mean.
W: Even more importantly, I’ll meet producers and other people in the arts—hopefully, people who will be good mentors and teach me essential skills, and who will recommend me for interesting jobs that come up.
M: You seem very optimistic. How can you be sure you’ll get the right internship?
W: The college will offer more options. They’re making this a graduation requirement, so they have to provide enough ways for everyone to do it, right? It’s good for the college, too, because it links us more to the community.
