After a series of fatal accidents causing severe casualties, recently the central government has launched a campaign to regulate drunk driving. Drunk driving is currently only considered a violation of traffic rules and drivers can only be detained for up to 15 days if they do not cause an accident. Some people propose that drunk driving be made a crime. What do you think of it? Write an essay of about 400 words on the following topic:
Is It Reasonable to Make Drunk Driving a Crime?

Is It Reasonable to Make Drunk Driving a Crime? With the tremendous development of the automobile industry in China, the number of drivers is increasing to a large extent, and so is the traffic accident rate. Currently, the problem of drunk driving has caught much attention after a series of fatal accidents causing severe casualties. The bloody scenes of accident sites and the death of promising lives have so deeply impressed the public that some people propose drunk driving be made a crime instead of a mere violation of traffic rules. However, the rationality of such a proposal is also questioned. As for those who support making drunk driving a crime, they believe that only legislation can eliminate the potential hazards brought by such activities from the very beginning. They insist that only moral restrictions are far from enough to prevent car accidents caused by drunk driving from happening. Drivers always consider themselves as the lucky dogs until real disasters happen. And the penalties for traffic accidents are also too tender to perform the functions of shock and awe. Only when every drunk driving is made a crime will drivers dare not drink before driving. Thus a major factor of traffic accident will be diminished and our transportation environment will be safer. However, many experts argue that the current laws and regulations have strict and precise stipulations on the measurement of penalties of drunk driving and crimes committed by drunk driving. Drunk driving itself should not be considered as a crime, while the crimes committed in the state of drunk driving will definitely be punished according to current rules. The proposal is a kind of simplification, which ignores the differences between the violation of laws and crime. In addition, relative regulations should be published to enhance the punishment to those who have the record of drunk driving within a certain period of time, so that the drivers who are prone to drunk driving will pay more attention to their desire of alcohol because of the potential punishments. All in all, the debate is still continuing. As for my viewpoint, the penalties of drunk driving should be enhanced so that there will be less tragedies caused by traffic accidents. However, whether a drunk-driving driver should be considered as a criminal or not should depend on specific conditions, and drinking itself should not be considered as the only standard of crime.
