答案 This table illustrates the reading preferences of students in an American university in 2002. Evidently, popular fiction takes up the largest proportion of the percentage of book circulation in the library. Books on general nonfiction and books on science, technology and education take up 18.2% and 10.8% respectively while those on art, literature, and poetry occupy about only 5.1%. A brief examination of those statistics will reveal the problem in the university students’ choice of reading materials, for example, the excessive interest in popular novels which cater to the low taste of the populace and are of little value. On the other hand, art, literature, and poetry which convey the profoundest message are neglected, because they are neither as interesting as fictions nor as practical as technology. I love reading literature most, because I esteem most the refinement of sentiment it will bring about. Books are not for amusement like popular novels. Nor is it for practical use like the technological instructions are. For me, books are for the elevation of the mind.
