Essential Qualities; Inherited or Not? Nowadays, there is an increasing number of experts starting doing research on people’s personalities. An old Chinese saying that man’s nature at birth is good has become the oldest and valuable evidence to support that our essential qualities are inherited from parents. However, as far as I am concerned, what kind of person we are going to be depends on our family, education, social backgrounds rather than the genes from our parents. Firstly, family background determines the formation of our characteristics and the process of our self-development to a large degree. Previous statistics showed that children in traditional nuclear families are healthier psychologically and tend to be more positive and active than those in step-parent families and single-parent families, which can explain why some children brought up in single parent families have bad performance in their life and would even commit a crime later in life. Secondly, education determines our personalities. It is generally believed that receiving education is one of the most significant parts in one’s life as education provides us with more chances to broaden our mind and more knowledge used for knowing ourselves. In this way, we can develop a right world outlook and character of confidence, industry and optimism. A latest survey among 50 sets of twins with different education levels shows that even though they share the common genes, they don’t usually hold the same life attitudes and interests. Thirdly, social backgrounds determine what kind of person we are finally going to be. As an old saying goes, the times produce their heroes. Dating back to the pioneering age in the early years of America, we find that there are quite a few heroes who are brave enough to explore new land coming into our mind. And nowadays in America, creativeness and adventurous spirit are highly appreciated and a large number of Americans have owned these kinds of qualities. In conclusion, our essential qualities are determined by families, education and our social backgrounds instead of genes. Although some researches have pointed out the important role of genes, there’s no denying that the environment in which we grow up are more vital to the shaping our qualities. Above all, the inherited qualities are technically not ours, they belong to our parents. And it only represents what we already have since we were given birth. Life isn’t invariable but changeable. It is true that the essential qualities of a person are not inherited but accumulated in later life.
