答案Social changes Part 1 (2 minutes) E First of all, we’d like to know something about you,so I’m going to ask some questions about yourselves. E Could you say something about the changes that have taken place in your hometown in the last ten years? A There are so many changes in my hometown that have made my hometown quite different from that of ten years before. During the last ten years, China has carried out reforms in various fields such as economics, education and politics. Reforms have already brought Chinese people a lot of benefits, and my hometown is one of the beneficiaries. Firstly, the living conditions have improved greatly. Ten years ago, almost every family in my hometown was very poor, and they could only dress warmly or eat their fill. But now, the lives of the people in my hometown can be summarized by one word: rich. Every family has their own storied buildings with many kinds of electronics instead of an old and crowded bungalow. Moreover, most children of my hometown are educated better than ever before. More and more children are entering universities and colleges to receive higher education. So many changes have taken place in the last ten years, and I can’t mention them one by one because of the time limit. I wish you could come to my hometown to experience the changes yourself. E Will the increasing number of private cars cause any problems in big cities? A Certainly the increasing number of private cars will cause some problems in big cities. Firstly, it will increase the pressure in traffic of big cities. Nowadays almost every big city is trying their best to construct streets, highways and subways, but the development of these still can’t meet the increasing demand of private cars. Secondly, the increasing number of private cars will cause increased pollution. Because of the increase of private cars, more and more poisonous gas will be given off to pollute the atmosphere and cause actual harm to the health of people. E What changes will the wide use of the Internet in China bring about? A With the development of personal computers, Internet is becoming more and more popular on the globe with each passing day. The Internet is a powerful way to communicate check emails, get instant message and chat in chat rooms. It has, and will bring China many miracles. Above all, the economy of China will be improved greatly by the wide use of the Internet. Now there is a "New Economy"— one characterized by the dominance of high-technology industries, immunity from cyclical downturns, and, most of all, rapid productivity growth. China will step into a new epoch by the wide use of the Internet. Secondly, it will bring Chinese people changes in lifestyle. With Internet, it is more convenient and faster for people to get a variety of information and all they need to do is just press a few buttons. E-mail can transmit a message quickly, safely and accurately; doctors may use it to diagnose and treat their patients by discussing or exchanging experience with doctors in other parts of the world; students may obtain new knowledge from a national-long-distance-educational-system via Internet; housewives will buy commodities at low prices and of good qualities. In a word, everybody in China is anticipating the changes brought about by the wide use of the Internet. E What, in your opinion, is the biggest change that has taken place in China today? B I think the development of the economy is the biggest change that has taken place in China today. In the last ten years, the development of the economy can be seen obviously from many fields such as people’s living conditions. There are more elec-tronics in Chinese homes; more people choose to travel which is costly as their entertainment during their holidays. As everybody knows, economy is the foundation of other aspects of a society. So, the development of the economy promoted the development of culture, military affairs, spaceflight, etc. Now China is a powerful country in the world. More people begin to appreciate and show interest in China. E Please tell us something about the changes in higher education in recent years. B The first and biggest change, I think, is that colleges and universities are now enrolling more students than ever before, so more high school students can receive higher education. As a result, more talented people can contribute to the development of the economy. Secondly, the tuition system of higher education is reforming. That means, the tuition and fees are increasing, so the students who passed the University Entrance Exam have the new anxiety of paying college tuition and fees. Many people are complaining about it. However, it will never keep poor students away from university, and I think it will help the development of education industry.
