Native Speakers as English Teachers in China 纪晓斌 Not many years ago, hardly any educational institution in China had native speakers as English teachers. Nowadays, however, blue-eyed English teachers have become a commonplace in universities and colleges, high schools, and even elementary schools. They are very helpful to the students, because they give them access to genuine and authentic English and they inspire the young to learn their native cultures. For one thing, they help the students to master authentic English. Almost everyone will agree that the best way to learn English well is to practice it in an English-speaking environment, yet few of the English learners really have access to such environment. They are advised to carry on a conversation with people around, which usually end up in failure, because neither side of the conversation is able to use good English. This problem can be best solved if a native speaker is available. Students would find themselves speaking English naturally, not only because they have to, but more importantly, because their attention is unconsciously directed from how they are talking to what they are talking about. Some people may argue that recordings, textbooks and dictionaries will suffice for students to learn English well. But those aids usually lag way behind the development of a living language. What’s more, the textbooks and the classroom teaching activities give too much emphasis on imitation, that is, the imitation of pronunciation, intonation, expression, etc., while the essential thing in any effective communication is interaction. For another thing, native speakers bring with them new culture and new ways of teaching, both of which are beneficial to Chinese students. As we know, language is in essence a tool and carrier of culture, the English language is no exception. Thus, to learn English well, it is necessary and most helpful to know something about the English culture. What’s more, contact with different cultures is usually stimulating. That partly explains why students tend to be attracted to their foreign teachers. As English teachers, native speakers are most likely to teach in an easy, informal and relaxed way, thus making learning much more enjoyable. All these things may combine to improve students’ English proficiency. All in all, native speakers as English teachers are helpful to Chinese students, because they can help them to gain a good command of English and may inspire their thinking as well. To learn English well, it is advisable to have a native speaker around.
