答案
SCHOOLKIDS GOING TO EVENING SCHOOL Yesterday evening I dropped in on a friend of mine and found his ten year-old daughter having an early supper by herself. Why didn’t she have sup per with the family? "She’s going to English classes in an evening school," explained her father. This is not a rare case. My friend’s daughter is just one of thousands of school kids around the city who are learning foreign languages in evening schools. A survey conducted by Shanghai’s Municipal Education Bureau indicates that in 2005, the enrollment of school pupils in different evening schools jumped to 80 per cent, compared with 4 per cent fourteen years ago. Evening schools and various tutoring centers have mushroomed all over the city to cater not only for on-the job adults but for school pupils as well. Why are so many school kids attending language evening classes? The most obvious reason is that parents are attaching much importance to having their children mastering a foreign language. In this age of economic reforms, more people have come to realize that the command of a second language of ten means a good opportunity for a successful career—a passport to a prosperous future. It is true that most primary schools in China make English a compulsory part of the curriculum, but a pupil begins to learn English only when he is in his third or fourth grade, and there are only three lesson periods per week. Many parents, who cannot wait till then or do not settle for the little amount of English taught at school, send their children to language schools in the evening in the hope that they will learn it at an ever earlier age and learn much more to be ahead of the pack. And good teachers and advanced equipment also play a part in the ever increasing enrollment of evening school students. Most of the teachers there are from colleges and universities. Senior lecturers or professors, they have much experience in teaching foreign languages. "With so many good teachers and such modern audio-visual aids," said my friend, "it is worthwhile to send my daughter there." Yeah, for most of the parents, a successful child is the ultimate proof of their success.
