答案
In the past few yeas, the Chinese saw an incredible boom in the economy and millions were pulled up out of poverty to earn a decent living wage. However, many have noticed a striking paradox in the expanding economy. While people get richer, they don’t seem to get happier—rather they’re getting increasingly unhappy. So we cannot help but wonder about the reasons. First of all, getting richer also means taking on more responsibility and forsaking something valuable, such as quantity of time with kids and once-in-a-while meeting with friends and family members. All these will cause frustration and unhappiness. Moreover, money has the biggest positive effect on happiness among the poor. But when they are already relatively well-off, more money makes less difference. While many Chinese are getting richer in absolute terms, they are not getting richer in relative terms. As average income levels are pulled higher by the small minority of rich and super-rich, more people feel poorer in comparison. Consequently they feel less satisfied with life and less happy. So, the unhappiness largely comes from an increasing disparity between the rich and poor.
