Major Steps: Step 1 Pre-writing (10 minutes) (1) Ask students to read the recipe for cheese baked potatoes and list the content of a recipe: list of ingredients and steps. Then ask them to think of what makes the recipe clearly and conclude the writing characteristics of recipe: imperatives; (the linking words) first, then, next, finally, etc.; chronological order. (2) Play a video about making dumplings from A Bite of China and ask students to set down some notes about the procedures of making dumplings and some operation cautions. (3) Divide students into groups of four, and ask them to share and perfect the notes that they just took. They need to make a list of the ingredients and procedures of making dumplings. And then ask some of them to share their notes. Give them some supplements if necessary. (Justification: By reading the given passage, watching the video and having a discussion, students will be clear about what they need to do when making dumplings.) Step 2 While-writing (4 minutes) Give students 4 minutes to write a recipe for dumplings. They need to pay attention to the cooking steps, spelling, grammar and linking words. If they have any difficulties, they can ask for help. (Justification: By writing a short passage, students’ writing ability will be enhanced.) Step 3 Post-writing (6 minutes) (1) Self-editing and Peer-editing Students need to check their own writing, and then exchange their articles with their deskmates to polish the recipe. (2) Sharing and Evaluation Invite some of the students to read their recipes in front of the class and then ask other students to evaluate their writing based on the rubrics. Finally, the teacher gives a conclusion. (Justification: Students can learn from each other, and improve their writing skills.)
