When did aeroplanes begin to carry passengers?
Immediately after the First World War, areoplanes began to carry passengers. In February 1919, a German company used some bombers for this purpose. They could carry only two passengers at a time. A French company began the first service between Paris and Brussels at the same time. In August 1919, an English company also started regular passenger flights from near London to Pads. Conditions, however, were very different from today. The English company, for example, gave their passengers hot water bottles, heavy gloves and warm coats. They had to. The passengers traveled in open cabins.
Weather information was also given in a very different way. Today, of course, all this is done by radio. But there were no aeroplane radios then. A Dutch company overcame this problem. Before its planes flew passengers across the English Channel, the pilots had to fly low over a certain spot. A man who worked for the company had a garden there. It was right on the coast. The man wrote the weather information on a large blackboard. When the pilots flew low they could road it.
There were still great difficulties in navigation. Generally, passengers’ planes flew very low. The pilot simply followed the roads of railway tracks. This caused certain problems. Once for example, an English plane was following the road to Paris. A French plane was following the same road to English. The two planes crashed into each other in midair simply because the pilots were both looking down at the time.
