答案 As is described in the picture, with his mouth sealed with tape, a kid fails to respond while his father is talking incessantly to him. Seemingly a little exaggerating, it goes without saying that the picture aims at revealing a current problem of the communication between parents and kids. An investigation of effective communication shows: kids may tune out when parents talk on and on; kids generally don’t respond positively when they feel like they’re being ordered around. Such actions bring about ineffective communication and conflicts between parents and children. The primary reason for this phenomenon is that the Chinese way of parenting is heavily affected by Confucianism with extreme respect for the elder. Hence, under the influence of traditional Chinese education concept, some parents favor authoritarian parenting strategies, not allowing their children’s independent voices or senses of self-efficacy. Consequently, children lose opportunities to express their own opinions, gradually getting used to doing what they are told to instead of thinking independently and critically. From the above analysis, we come to the conclusion that good communication is an important parenting skill, while the positive two-way communication is essential to fostering children’s ability of independent and creative thinking. Having empathy, respecting children’s feelings, allowing them to make choices, and setting fair and clear limits on unacceptable behaviors can form a healthy and balanced parent-child relationship that all parents should strive for.
