答案 Chinese-English Translation of Internet Buzzwords With the rapid development of science and technology, Internet has become a necessary tool in our daily life. Derived from the Internet, network buzzwords affect our language and integrate into our life with their unique features. Therefore, how to translate these buzzwords with Chinese characteristics into appropriate English so as not to provoke misunderstanding has become an urgent task for us. From the perspective of the theory of dynamic equivalence, in order to highlight the real meaning and cultural connotation of network buzzwords, the C-E translation of Internet buzzwords could employ the following methods: literal translation, transliteration, free translation and innovation translation, etc. In the following parts, I will take the 2010 Internet buzzword—"geili"—as an example to explore the four kinds of translation methods of the particular word. Literal translation is the translation method of translating the source language word by word into the target language. It is now still the main technique in C-E translation. On the contrary, free translation is an alternative approach generally used to convey the meaning and spirit of the original without trying to copy its sentence patterns or figures of speech. As for "geili" , New York Times introduces the word like this: " Chinese Internet buzzword which means ’ cool’ , ’ awesome , or exciting’ ; literally, ’ giving power’ ". In the introduction, "giving power" could be referred to as aliteral translation, for it translates the two words respectively, which is basically clear. The translations of "cool" , "awesome" , "exciting" can be regarded as free translation, which interpret the original meaning of the word—"geili". Personally, I prefer the free translation method for it is precise and untreatable. Under the guide of this principle and according to the variation of context, "geili" could also be translated as "forceful" , "fantastic" , "joyful" , "come on" , etc. Transliteration is a transcription from one alphabet to another and it is one of the main approaches for name translation while innovation translation, just as its name implies, is translating innovatively. After the emergence of "geili" and its widespread popularity among net citizens, some brilliant people came up with a novel translation of the word, which is "gelivable". In my point of view, the translation can be seen both as a transliteration and an innovative translation. The new translation was soon welcomed for its catchiness and readability. The translation of Internet buzzwords has become more and more popular recently. To propagate Chinese culture effectively and show the charm of Chinese characters, translators should seek the most effective and equivalent effects in the translation of Internet buzzwords.
