I think that it has changed quite a lot. The families used to live together—if not in the same house, at least in the same town. Now, however, it’s quite normal for young people to live in a different town—or even a different region—to their parents. A lot of people criticise this development, but it’s really a result of better transportation and the fact that sometimes there are few opportunities for young people in the countryside. I don’t think so. My parents never believed this, which is unusual in Italy. I think that each person should do whatever they can and try to share responsibilities, such as shopping, childcare, cooking and cleaning. I think it helps people to understand each other better. There are certainly some advantages in this. Other family members can help each other, particularly with looking after children. On the other hand, I wouldn’t want to be too close to my parents—or my wife’s parents. They might try to take over your lives and tell you how to raise your kids and the life. I think that families will get smaller and this will focus more attention on the child or children. This might be a good thing, because the parents should have more time and money for each child, but it could also be a bad thing if the child becomes spoilt. I think that in the future it will also become more common for family members to live in different parts of a country or even in different countries, It’s not unusual today, but it’s not the norm. That will probably change. Good parents should take the time to get to know their children. They should be able to explain to them why something is right or wrong, not just tell them in a few simple words. They should also be good at keeping their children active. Children get bored very quickly, so they need to go out and see and do things—like go to museums, amusement parks, zoos and spotting events. I think I will try to give my kids a little more freedom. My parents are a little imposing. They are not as bad as some other parents I have met, but sometimes I wish that they wouldn’t try to control what I do so much. Their argument is that I’m living in their house, but I think that’s a weak argument. Anyway, VII be leaving home to go to university soon.
