Who was the man by profession?
One of my most unforgettable experiences was a flight back home from a business trip. I had had a very busy week and a long air journey. So when we were told to fasten our seat belts, for we were over the airport, I was already thinking of having a good sleep as soon as I got home. But soon I noticed that the plane was circling over the airport and, what’s more, it was moving unsteadily through the air, I sensed that something was wrong. At that moment, an air hostess appeared. She looked very pale, but was quite calm. She walked along the aisle and spoke quickly to everyone, almost in a whisper. She told us that the pilot had fainted and asked if any of us, the passengers, knew anything about machines, or at least knew how to drive a car. Many people started to panic at her words, and I heard a few hopeless or horrified screams here and there. To tell you the truth, I was scared, like everyone else. You simply couldn’t help in situations like this, could you? But I felt I bad to do something before it was too late. I hesitated for a while, then I unfastened my seat belt, got up and followed the hostess into the pilot’s cabin.
I moved the pilot aside, and took his seat. The air hostess told me that people at the airport below were sending instructions by radio and I must listen to them carefully and do exactly what I was told. The plane was now dangerously close to the ground, but I was relieved when it began to climb. I had to circle the airport several times in order to become familiar with the controls. I knew perfectly well the danger had not yet passed before I landed the plane safely. I followed the instructions and guided the plane towards the airfield. It shook violently as it touched the ground and then moved rapidly across the field, but after a long distance it stopped safely. A crowd of people had gathered outside. They had been watching anxiously and now they rushed forward to congratulate me on the perfect landing.
