More than Half Surveyed Say English Should Be an Optional Course
More than one in two people support English becoming an elective subject for national university entrance exams, known as gaokao, China Youth Daily reported.
An online survey of 2 001 participants found 54.4% supported the suggestion. However, 50.3% said strengthening Chinese language education in schools should not be at the cost of English language studies.
An English teacher at a high school in Jinan City, Shandong Province, said students learn English only to pass the written gaokao test, so they generally perform poorly when it comes to oral and listening skills.
The survey also found 45. 2% believed making English an elective subject would help reduce study stress while 27.2% thought it could make students more self-motivated.
As for purposes of studying English, the survey found the top three reasons are to help gain work opportunities in foreign companies (40.9%), to travel abroad (36.9%) and to prepare for exams (31%). Other motivations included studying abroad and watching English movies.
Wei Yuhao, who works for an Internet company in Beijing, said English can play a very important role in a career and must not be ignored. Wei also believed the core problem is how English is being studied rather than whether to study the subject or not.
Cao Yun, whose child is in middle school, said she was worried that making English an elective subject would lead to complete neglect of the language in today’s test-centered education system. In the survey, 54.7% shared Cao’s concern that an elective course essentially means giving up.
A deputy to the National People’s Congress, the top legislature, recently called for the English test to be dropped from gaokao and made optional for high school students.

答案 English Shouldn’t Be Turned into an Optional Course Owing to the study pressure and the unsatisfactory result of English learning fostered by the rote-based pedagogy in China, more than half of those surveyed suggest that English be an optional subject. A different voice, however, is also heard about the justification of English as a compulsory course with reasons listed below. Personally, I think English study should not be weakened. Firstly, the de-emphasis on English learning might limit both our national access to the international stage and our personal performance. From a grander view, globalization demands talent with international horizons of which the core is a bilingual education. From a personal point of view, the chance to work in a foreign company, the likelihood to enroll in an overseas university and the travel on an alien land or just the pure enjoyment of international resources all justify English not as an elective but a compulsory course. Furthermore, despite the much lamented fact that many English learners are learning "dumb English", herein lies the real problem of how to learn English rather than whether it should be sharply curtailed. We should steer the present one-size-fits-all test to a beacon which can guide today’s too standardized and somehow unwise teaching into an effective one. All in all, the defects of today’s flawed bilingual education should not water down the importance of English which, as the sole global language, is used by most countries in the world. Therefore, it is only logical that English should be studied in an improved way instead of degrading it into an elective course.
