Oscar Sweeten-Lopez: I’m constantly amazed at the current debate on whether we need more college graduates or whether the price of education outweighs the value. People are totally missing the point that a college degree itself isn’t the end goal. The end goal is increasing an individual’s access to opportunities to live a better life and increase his ability to be a fully contributing member of society. While a college degree isn’t a prerequisite to obtaining a well-paid job, the data show that the higher your educational attainment, the higher your lifetime earning potential and the lower your likelihood of being unemployed.
Jamie Merisotis, president and CEO of Lumina Foundation: The payoff from getting a college degree is huge and is actually increasing. For people wondering if a college degree is worth it: Not only is it worth it, but the premium is growing. Those with bachelor’s degrees, no matter the field, earn vastly more than counterparts with some college ( $ 1.55 million in lifetime earnings) or a high school diploma ($1.3 million lifetime) , indicating that no matter the level of attainment or the field of study, simply earning a four-year degree is often integral to financial success later in life.
Andrew Syrios: A college degree does not even guarantee a particularly high income. CBS News ran an article on the 20 worst-paid college degrees. The worst was Child and Family Studies with a starting average salary of $29,500 and a mid-career average of $38,400. Art History came in 20th with a starting average of $39,400 and a mid-career average of $57,100. Other degrees in between included elementary education, culinary arts, religious studies, nutrition, and music. These are decent salaries, but are they worth the monetary and opportunity costs? With the wealth of information on the Internet, many skills can be attained on one’s own. Alternatives to college such as entrepreneurship and apprenticeship programs are often ignored. Indeed, apprentices typically get paid for their work while they are learning. The average yearly wage of a plumber and electrician are $52,950 and $53,030 respectively. That’s better than many college degrees and comes without the debt.
Richard Vedder, Ohio University economist: A key measure of the benefits of a degree is the college graduates’ earning potential—and on this score, their advantage over high-school graduates is deteriorating. Since 2006, the gap between what the median college graduates earned and that of the median high-school graduates has narrowed by $1,387 for men over 25 working full time, a 5% fall. Women in the same category have fared worse, losing 7% of their income advantage ($ 1,496). A college degree’s declining value is even more pronounced for younger Americans. According to data collected by the College Board, for those in the 25 - 34 age range the differential between college graduate and high school graduate earnings fell 11% for men, to $ 18,303 from $20,623. The decline for women was an extraordinary 19.7% , to $ 14,868 from $ 18,525. Meanwhile, the cost of college has increased 16.5% in 2012 since 2006, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ higher education tuition-fee index.

Does High Education Guarantee a High Income? It used to be a universal truth that graduates with high degrees were bound to earn a high income. However, in recent years the truth has been shaken by the reoccurrence of graduates with high degrees failing to obtain a high income. Therefore, a heated discussion has been aroused as to the question whether high education can guarantee high income. After scrupulous analysis of the statistics concerning the relation between high education and high income, many analysts and experts draw the conclusion that the advantage of high degree holders is deteriorating and the gap is narrowing. What’s more, other experts point out straightforwardly that gone are the days that high degrees guarantee high incomes. However, other experts maintain that high education paves the way for high income. Besides, they believe that high education ensures the graduates lifetime financial success, increases their ability to attain high-paid occupations and lowers the possibility of being unemployed. Although it has to be admitted that there comes certain difficulties for high degree graduates to maintain high income in face of the current competitive job market, I still stick to the belief that high degree ensures high income. On the one hand, high education presents the graduates with a broadened world view and a vast platform. They may encounter some difficulties in securing a high income job at their first attempt, but in the long run they will defeat their counterparts at grasping promotion opportunities with the help of the integrated knowledge and expertise training received. On the other hand, getting a high degree isn’t solely about increasing students’ earning potential. But the process itself prepares them to take advantage of a more expansive set of career opportunities and to blaze their own trails. To conclude, I hold the firm belief that high education plays a role of utmost importance for graduates to maintain high income. High degree doesn’t necessarily ensure high-paid jobs at the first place, but it surely prepares graduates for high income when opportunity comes.
