Why is Japan’s government planning the expenditure of 3 million yen?

Japan’s government is considering a new way to get people to consider life outside Tokyo: Pay them to leave. According to a report by national broadcaster NHK on Nov. 22, the government is mulling giving as much as 3 million yen to people who decide to relocate from the 23 wards of Tokyo and find jobs elsewhere, starting in the next fiscal year.

Authorities sifted through the charred wreckage of California’s deadliest-ever wildfire on Sunday, searching for any signs of the 1,276 people now listed as missing after the Camp Fire tore through the mountain town of Paradise. The remains of 79 people have been recovered so far, 63 of whom have been tentatively identified pending DNA confirmation.
