How many electorates opposed the EU constitution in French?

French President Jacques Chirac urged voters today to ratify the European Union’s first constitution in a referendum set for Sunday. Chirac made his appeal in a televised address to the nation where polls show that more than 50 percent of the electorate opposed the EU constitution, with about 20 percent undecided. Supporters of the EU constitution say it will strengthen all of Europe and help it to stay economically competitive with the United States and emerging economic giants such as China. Opponents say it will lead to a loss of French sovereignty and replace French jobs with cheap labor from other EU nations. A loss in Sunday’s referendum would be a serious setback to Chirac’s government although he has said that he won’t resign if it’s rejected.
