Don’t Force Us to Choose 谢炜珊 In China, many students at senior high school are divided into those who pursue studies in arts or those in sciences. Some educators argue that specialization at high school may be harmful to the intellectual development of the young. My opinion is that it is too early for students at senior high to make a choice between arts and sciences, and this makes sense in the following two aspects. On the one hand, the early choice between arts and sciences will surely narrow down one’s ways of future development. Actually, this specialization system is designed in line with the needs of the college entrance examination, in which students are forced to choose between arts and sciences. This may help students to be clear about what they should strive for. But the problem is that, in most cases, students have to make a decision as soon as they step into the senior high school, when, in fact, they do not know yet what subjects they are really interested in or would like to specialize in. As a result, some students make the wrong choice, and when they find it wrong, it is too late. On the other hand, the early choice between arts and sciences will hinder acquiring general knowledge for some students. Students at senior high school tend to disregard what they call "unimportant" or "unnecessary" subjects that will not be tested in the college entrance examination. It is not unusual to see a student specializing in arts does not know what monoxide or dioxide is and one specializing in sciences does not know who Van Gogh is. There is no denying the fact that, to make something of oneself, a good mastery of some general knowledge will be of great help. That is why Einstein said playing the violin had given him the inspirations to find the theory of relativity, and why Mr. Qian Xuesen, the Father of Missile of our country, is good at history. Senior high school years are an important formative stage for the teenagers to develop both physically and intellectually. They are introduced into a new world they have never entered befog. It is not sensible for the students at senior high school to make a choice before they know what they truly want. In the present state of affairs, students at senior high school have reason to cry out, "Don’t force us to choose."
