Employees usually have their time managed for them by company regulations, but small business owner/managers and other employers must manage their own time. The opinion is widespread that success in small business requires long hours of hard work, and most owner/managers do put in long hours. Others, however, equally successful through adroit time management, accomplish just as much and achieve the same results in more nearly normal working hours. c．Skill training is very important. In some cases, learning more rapid ways to perform essential tasks may be indicated. In most cases, however, the owner/manager of a small business must learn to set priorities, establish timesaving routines and policies, and delegate authority to employees. Small business owners and the corporate managers of large firms are expected to become involved in the political and social structures of the communities in which their businesses are located. The owner/managers of small businesses, however, often find that for them the contribution of time and money can become a relatively heavy burden unless carefully controlled. d．Change is a reality every owner/manager of a small business must face. To operate a business successfully he or she must not only have education, training, and/or experience in basic management and business skills, but also be adaptable to social and economic change. Adaptability to change often requires re-education, or a continuing form of management education. As with any other aspect of business planning, plans or provisions should be made for a line of succession to key jobs in management or for the continued operation of the business in the event of the owner/manager untimely death, incapacity, or retirement. While the need to plan for management succession exists in all businesses, the loss of leadership and management skill usually is much more damaging to a small business.
