So you’re new on the job, new to your career, new to the workplace. When you look at yourself in a new mirror, are you proud of the kind of worker you are?
Your answer could be a snapshot (快照) of the future: yours, and that of your 【S1】______ .
After years of careful study, a research team has found three guideposts to good work ethics (道德准则): mission, models, and mirror test. In other words, "good" workers tend to have the 【S2】______ that they are serving a broader community, often have 【S3】______ themselves to good role models, and are able to 【S4】______ on what their professional ethical decisions said about them.
The following is an interview with Professor Gardner, author of 18 books and professor of both education and 【S5】______ at Harvard.
Q: In your study, young journalists and scientists admitted to using dishonest methods to achieve praiseworthy ends. Are situational ethics on the rise?
A: Newspapers today are 【S6】______with people who could have stopped cutting comers but couldn’t avoid 【S7】______ . Society cannot exist if everybody’s cutting corners, because it means you can’t trust anybody. You can only carry on a dishonest course against a background assumption that most people are honest. And most people still are.
Q: What are the stakes?
A: Dishonesty is a recipe (秘诀) for disaster. When the values of a line of work change, then the people 【S8】______ to it change. Also a domain (领域) could disappear. If accounting, for example, continues to be as deceitful as it looks now, it won’t exist in 20 years. Something new will 【S9】______ it.
