Staying home to study abroad is sweeping across college students and white-collar workers alike in China, not least because of individuals’ understanding that they can have fun by learning, and they can study well beyond the ivy towers. Staying home to study abroad is by far the easiest way to study, with freedom to call your own shots, pick the courses you want, cut loose whenever you feel like, and most importantly, it is free. As long as you have an Internet access and a computer, you can get almost the same experience as attending the class in person—only with a better seat and less noise. Its success is measured in a way by finding yourself on this journey of self-motivated exploration. It is, however, not always bliss—a house studying environment can be an invitation to interruption by the family members or friends. And often it is very difficult to resist temptations like to check the email inbox or click all those glittering buttons on the websites and see what they lead to. But successful bedroom-based boarding students have found balance between their virtual studies and real-life ones. They’ve learned to control the everyday chaos that invariably tries to seep into the at-home online studying. They’ve realized that it is not so much worth fighting as it is the beauty of home boarding. The learning is motivated by curiosity and passion. It is in throwing in the mouse, in abandoning boring lectures and in hanging with friends that lays the reason why they love doing it in the first place.
