According to the chart above, people are checking their phones as soon as they wake up (51%) , on their way to work(51%) , at lunch(51%) , in the evening (65%, 64%) , and even in bed (35%, 40%). This indicates that the majority of Chinese people are using their smartphones mainly in the evening, when they are back from work and want to relax. It might seem like a perfect opportunity to check your email, play a video game, see what your friends are up to on social media or check tomorrow’s weather forecast in the evening. However, according to relevant studies, smartphones are almost perfectly designed to disrupt sleep, because they keep us mentally engaged late into the evening, causing us to sleep a lot later than we ideally should. What’s more, people who are on their phones after 9p.m. are notably more tired and less productive the next day compared with their unplugged counterparts. Therefore, it is recommended that we should place our smartphone on the other side of the room and then get into bed with a good book when we are getting ready to sleep.
