Top Students Have Successful Parents?
A teenager named Xiong Xuan’ang gained public attention after he became the top gaokao (national college entrance examination) scorer in Beijing. Tn an interview, he declared that his achievement was largely the result of his parents’ instruction and Beijing’s educational resources.
In his opinion, top scorers are more likely to be born in middle- or upper-class families because their parents are usually intellectuals and tend to be successful.
Xiong said his parents are diplomats and that their influence unconsciously formed his character. By his estimation, it is becoming increasingly harder for students who come from lower or working class families to succeed.
Xiong’s point of view aggravated the anxiety of many young middle-class parents who worry that it’s getting hard to achieve social mobility, which they believe might cause their children to lose out on opportunities.
There is no doubt that Xiong’s parents are successful. They have also educated a successful child. But in my opinion, it’s one’s capacity for learning that creates a high achiever. Although the study environment is important, a more decisive factor should be the individual’s ability to learn, comprehend, concentrate and persevere.
From Xiong’s point of view, successful children tend to have successful parents. I don’t agree. I’m afraid he ignored the fact that some successful parents are more likely to dedicate themselves to their career rather than their family, leaving less time to instruct their children.
Only if a student tries his or her best and makes very few mistakes can he or she possibly become a top scorer, regardless of his or her parents’ success.

What Determines One’s Success? A Beijing gaokao laureate owed his academic achievement to a superior resource—his upper-class family background. His speech has sparked the anxiety of parents from lower ranks for the reason that their disadvantaged children might miss opportunities of climbing up the social ladder. However, it is one’s comprehensive ability to learn that determines one’s future, as pointed out by the author. The reasons are as follows. On the one hand, though important the study environment is to a student, one’s ability speaks louder on this issue. Countless empirical cases tell us that easy access to better educational resources doesn’t necessitate good performance. Many petulant children born with a silver spoon end up becoming good-for-nothings, only to make themselves subject to mockery. On the contrary, it is not rare that students from impoverished families outstrip their counterparts in both home and global competitions. On the other hand, on the odyssey to success, it is always one’s inner asset that spells one’s achievement. Should there be a godsend, it must be hidden in one’s qualities such as strong willpower, soaring ambition, draconian self-discipline and sharp perception. These have less to do with one’s family background than his ability to learn and aspiration to ascend. To summarize, despite the gushing wellspring of educational resources, it is the above attributes that help one savor triumph in the end. So instead of underestimating our capabilities, we’d better cheerfully struggle and turn the disadvantages into huge incentives, which will help us turn the tables in the future.
