Major Steps: Step 1 Pre-reading (4 minutes) (1) Ask several students to share their English learning methods. (2) Ask students to predict the content of the passage based on the title. (Justification: It is useful for students to open their minds and make a good preparation for understanding the content and purpose of this passage.) Step 2 While-reading (8 minutes) (1) Fast reading ① Skimming Before reading the passage for the first time, students should be reminded that they should not pay much attention to specific words or expressions but all they need to do is to get the main idea of each paragraph. After reading, invite some students to tell the class their answers. ② Scanning Ask students to read for the second time with the questions on the blackboard. Q1: How long do the courses last? Q2: Besides learning English, what can we get in the U.S.? Q3: What kind of exciting things can we do in Los Angeles? (2) Careful reading Ask students to read the text for the third time and answer the following questions: ① What are the advantages of living with local families? ② What’s the purpose of the passage? (3) What about foreign summer English courses? Would you like to take such kind of courses? Why or why not? (Justification: Fast reading is to train students’ reading ability for general ideas and basic information. Careful reading helps to cultivate their comprehending ability.) Step 3 Post-reading (8 minutes) Students will be divided into groups of four. Half of groups are to discuss the advantages of learning English abroad and half to discuss the advantages of learning at home. Then, they can have a debate. Finally, the teacher gives a conclusion and lists useful methods of learning English. (Justification: This activity is to practice students’ speaking and logical thinking ability and it can also enlighten students on proper ways to learn English.)
