What do you know about the history of your family? Tracing your【16】anc______can be a very interesting hobby. But, if you go about it in a methodical way, it can also【17】bec______very frustrating. If you want to make progress【18】w______your "family tree"without tearing your hair out in frustration, there are some simple rules which you should【19】f______.
First of all, note down all the names of your immediate【20】f______and draw a rough family tree, starting with yourself at the bottom. Don’t worry if you can only go back as【21】f ______as your grandparents.
You will have【22】m______a good start, especially if you can fill in most of the dates relating to births, marriages and deaths (BM&D for【23】sh).
Next, write down the names of all older【24】rel who are still alive; Grandfathers , grandmothers, great-aunts and great-uncles can be a mine of information.
You often find that they have originals of BM&D certificates, in【25】w______ case, ask nicely for copies because this will save you time and money. They might , also have family Bibles containing information going back many years, or photo【26】al ______and other documents that will help you in your search.
Thirdly, look in telephone【27】dir ______for other possible family, contacts. This is particularly valuable if you have a really unusual surname. Of course, if your name is a【28】com______one such as Smith or Brown, this is less likely to be worthwhile, unfortunately but it may mean that yours is a local family, or one which【29】h______stayed in the same business for several generations.
After that, you will be ready to visit places that keep official records: libraries, registry offices and so on. But leave that【30】un______ after you have done all the groundwork.
