W: Hi, Mike. I have been considering joining a volunteer group and I heard that you are working for The Plastic Problem. So could you share some information with me about that organization?
M: Sure. As you know, plastic bags, cups and other trash are filling landfills around the world, but a lot of waste doesn’t even make it to garbage bins. So the aim of this organization, to put it simply, is to collect plastic trash in an innovative way.
W: Sounds amazing, but what do you mean by innovative?
M: Nowadays we have a new program called "Plogging". It is basically you get some friends together, you get a plastic glove or two, and then a bag, and you just run around and, as you run through a neighborhood, you just pick up any trash you see along the way.
W: Plogging is the combined word for "jogging" and "picking", isn’t it?
M: Yes. We can say the drive to clean up city streets sparked global exercise craze.
W: When did this exercise begin?
M: The gear shops first began organizing plogging events earlier this summer in America.
W: Who is the founder of it?
M: Swedish-American Erik Ahlstrom is considered the godfather of plogging. He invented the earth-minded sport after moving from Sweden’s Are Ski Resort to Stockholm.
W: What initiated his idea of plogging then?
M: He said that he noticed there was so much more garbage than before, because he was cycling to work, and he could see that the garbage was laying there for weeks and no one was picking it up.
W: He must have been annoyed by all the trash.
M: True. That was why he began organizing pick-up-while-jogging events with friends and the wider running community.
W: And I noticed something was happening. When you are doing a physical activity like we did, you get your adrenaline going, and then it becomes like a treasure hunt.
M: Definitely. Now Heather Jeff travels the world speaking about plogging and uses his website to guide like-minded athletes in forming their own plogging groups.
W: Did it gain many supporters?
M: Today, the fitness craze has spread to nearly every continent. From Japan to Nigeria and India, government officials have advised municipalities across the country to organize plogging sessions for then-residents to combat pollution.
W: I saw some earth-conscious runners use the hashtags plogging to fill Instagram feeds with posts of their plunder, and plogging has even been spotted in marathons and other foot races around the world.
M: If you see garbage, it should be natural to pick it up. And if we start picking up, then the person next to us would do the same.
