One of the most debated topics about higher education is whether colleges should cultivate versatile talents or specialized ones. Views are much divided with sound reasons. Those who argue for versatile education claim that multi-skilled talents are far more popular than people who are specialized in only one field. This preference results from the fact that there is increasingly apparent trend of integration and coordination between different industries in today’s society and thus calling for versatile talents with a diverse range of knowledge and capabilities. Nonetheless, specialized education also has supporters. Specialized talents are believed to know more than others about one area and thus own a bigger chance to be outstanding. As far as I can see, whether colleges should cultivate versatile talents or specialized ones greatly depends on what kind of person one is. A person with a broad interest in various areas is a perfect potential versatile talent, while specialized education will find its followers among those who are particularly keen on one certain field. In a word, colleges should cultivate students according to their characteristics by applying different programs.
