Specifically, it will summarize the results of an experiment used to determine the effect of speed variation on the net production rate and the numbers of finished and rejected units per hour. The number of units assembled increased at an almost fixed rate as the assembly line speed increases steadily. With an increase of 0.5 feet in the speed, about 32 more units were assembled. However, the rate at which assemblies were rejected increased in an accelerated manner. While the increase of the rate remained steady around the value of 3 per foot before the speed reached 3 feet per minute, it was accelerated after the speed went past 3.5 per minute. For example, when the speed increased from 3.5 to 4 feet per minute, 26 more units were rejected by quality control and the net production increased only by 6 units. To conclude, although the production rate increased due to the speed accruement of the assembly line, the speed increase tended to jeopardize the quality of the units when the speed reached 3.5 and beyond.
