What to Do Now for the Future Aging Society China, the world’s most populous country, is now crowned with another title: one of the world’s most rapidly aging nations. According to statistics from the National Population and Family Planning Commission (NPFPC), the country’s top population policy-maker, citizens who are 65 or older have already accounted for 7.1 per cent of the overall population at the end of 2001. This figure is expected to shoot up dramatically in decades ahead, and some predictions indicate the proportion of aged people will surge to 24 per cent by 2050. Therefore, it is obvious that we should do something right now to cope with the problem. In my opinion, there are several things we need to do. China must bolster its inadequate social security and healthcare systems, which are poorly funded at present. Although China began to establish the social security system in 1997, the system is still far from perfection. Without a sufficient pension system, senior citizens will not have the sense of security for the rest of their lives. Life expectancy is expected to rise as medical advances continue and living standards improve, the elderly who believe they are obliged to receive support may increase greatly. Without a viable pension system, problems are certain to arise. Besides improving the current frail social security system, other options are also available to tackle looming problems. As a developing country with low productivity, investment in human resources should be enhanced. In this way the rising productivity could, to some extent, offset the negative impact of the declining labour forces. At the same time, the government should modify the current family planning policy to change social and economic conditions of the nation. To sum up, in order to deal with these circumstances and create a society in which people can enjoy true happiness throughout their lives, it is necessary to constantly review and revise social systems relating to employment, pensions, medical care, welfare, education, social involvement and living environments so as to adapt them to the society. To achieve this goal, both the national government and local governments, as well as corporations, local communities, households and individuals, must cooperate with one another and work actively to achieve our goal.
