Place Marketing
Place marketing is a marketing technique which typically looks to using a unique feature of a place to alter external perceptions in order to encourage tourism, business development, or other beneficial activities to take place there. In place marketing, places struggle and compete with each other to draw attention and preference amongst a target consumer group. Places may include countries, cities, parks, museums, restaurants and so on.

We’ve been talking a lot about marketing this past week and today we’ll continue by discussing place marketing. Place marketing is simply a marketing technique that looks to drawing attention to a location’s uniqueness. By highlighting unique features of a place, marketers look to encouraging tourism and other activities to take place at that location thereby boosting the local economy. Let me give you an example to make this concept a little clearer.
Let’s take a look at a small town that’s located near a sea. This town wants to have more tourists visit and have more tourism revenue. Nearby this town, however, there are many other towns by the sea, but nobody else also has a great bike path. The town uses the allure of bike riding and the bike path to set itself apart from the other nearby towns to attract potential tourists to their town. The town uses place marketing to highlight the unique feature of a local bike path to potential tourists, promoting active vacations along the beach front, bicycle races, bicycle rentals, and so on. And guess what, the marketing technique was successful. A lot of young and active tourists came to the small beach town to explore and enjoy their vacations. This had the benefit of strengthening and bolstering the local economy and the town continued to prosper.

Place marketing is a technique that seeks to attract tourists and boost local economy by emphasizing unique features of a place. Places of the same kind will compete to lure tourists with their uniqueness. Such places may include countries, cities, museums, and restaurants. Take the example of a seaside town. In order to develop its unique feature and enhance its appeal to visitors, this town compares the strengths of the similar towns nearby and finds that nobody has a bike path. After building a bike path, this town succeeds in making itself a standout from its competitors and attracts a flock of cyclists by highlighting its bike rentals and bike races along the seaside. The town’s tourism thus benefits from this place marketing strategy and continues to flourish.
