答案 Soap Operas A soap opera is a kind of television drama series, which used to target at housewives who have plenty of free time at home. But now it is embraced by a wider audience. People’s opinions vary from each other when it comes to soap operas, some regard it as an entertainment, others consider it as a waste of time. As far as I am concerned, there are both advantages and disadvantages. A prominent feature of soap operas is realism, which means it reflects and reproduces everyday life of ordinary people. Therefore, it can sometimes guide people to find a way out of trouble in life. For example, a crime series like Law & Order can help people to be more articulate and learns the tricks to defend themselves. Besides, soap operas usually revolve around characters from diverse groups of the society. The conflicts between those characters not only make the story gripping but also lead the audience to learn about different groups of people. As a result, this would be beneficial to people’s mutual understanding in the real world. There are also some series that are just for fun. They are good for people’s mental health because they can help people let off steam and remove their bad mood. However, soap operas may exert negative influences, especially on youngsters who are too naive to tell the right from wrong. Some shows portray a distorted world-view or are full of violent and vulgar contents which can be easily imitated by viewers, especially teenagers. For instance, some young people may develop smoking habits after they watch gangster series, thinking that smoking is a sign of maturity and charm. Apart from that, watching soap operas is also very time-consuming. People may get so hooked that they have little time to finish their own work well. This is even worse for students who have a heavy workload but little self-control. Meanwhile, it is worth mentioning that spending hours watching soap opera will damage people’s eyesight, and increase the number of "couch potatoes" who have an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes. To sum up, soap operas help people to understand others from different social backgrounds and even learn life hacks sometimes. They, however, may have negative effects on teenagers and watching too many series will be harmful to people’s health. To make soap operas more a delight than an upset requires people to be more conscious when they chose series and have more self-discipline as well.
