Should Driving Be Restricted in Big Cities? It is true that a car can make our life much easier. We can go anywhere around the city in a short time by car. If we can afford it, I guess we all want to buy a car ourselves. No wonder more and more cars appear on the roads every day. However, there are many serious problems due to the large number of cars in the city. It is high time to restrict driving in big cities now. First, driving is a costly transportation in terms of fuel consumption and environment. Mostly there is only one or two people in a car, but a bus or an underground train can send tens or hundreds of people to their destination. Therefore, undoubtedly, using the public transportation saves much energy, which does good to the environment. If more people choose the public transport instead of driving, the fuel saved can be considerable, especially in big cities. Second, with so many cars on the road, driving has been an unpleasant experience. The heavy traffic jams in big cities, especially in the rush hour, have made it notoriously inconvenient to drive. Once I was caught in the traffic jam, and it took me more than an hour to cover a short distance of only about 200 meters around an interchange. Riding a bicycle or just walking would have saved much more time! Then what should be done to restrict driving in big cities? Remember, to restrict driving does not mean to ban driving all together, nor does it mean to cause inconveniences to citizens. The governments of big cities can do much concerning this issue. First, the government can consider levying fuel tax to discourage driving. Second, just as is the case in Beijing during the 2008 Olympic Games, the government can forbid half of the cars to run on the street on special occasions. Third, the government should lay more emphasis on public transportation in order to encourage individuals to drive less. If public transport is faster, more convenient, and cheaper, I think more drivers will switch to it. Finally, I suggest that bicycle renting services be provided at bus or subway terminals so that passengers can go wherever they want to easily without having to drive. All in all, I think it not only necessary but also possible to restrict driving in big cities.
