Professional Ethics Until this Wednesday, 4 babies died and more than one thousand children were in hospital after having the milk powder contaminated with an industrial chemical melamine which, doctors say, can lead to kidney stones and possibly life-hreatening kidney failure. And many families concerned are trapped in great sadness and depression. Facing this miserable fact, we cannot but think about a word that has not been heard mentioned for many years -- "professional ethics", which is especially more compelling today than ever, because the incident this time affects not only people’s safety of life, but also the national stability. First things first, for any career, whether being a doctor, a lawyer, or a teacher and so on, one should stick to professional ethics. Once it fails to be complied with, the most direct and serious victims are innocent people. Take one of the most sensational accidents "Guildford four" for example, in order to deal with the explosion accident in Guildford, Ireland as quickly as possible, the local policemen forced four Irish people, including a young girl and an old man to admit they were I.R.A. members and had conceived the whole intrigue. As a result, all the four were sentenced to life in prison. And until 15 years later when the case was readdressed by a lawyer of integrity, they were let out, except that the old man had already died in the imprisonment and the young girl was already in her thirty, spending her most beautiful years in the dark and dull cell. As the guardian of peace and justice, the policemen failed to protect people. Just as the former British Prime Minister Tony Blair said when he apologized to them, "Police should have been infused with blood of ethics." Secondly, the effects of professional ethics go beyond the field of business world. They are also bound to the fate of a country and hurt its people. As practitioners of a very special profession, reporters serve as the voice of truth and reality. However, CNN, one of the most authoritative media agencies of the world, distorted the fact of "3.28 Tibetan Turmoil," Publicizing an extremely ridiculous photo, saying "the Chinese troops were quelling the Tibetan people." But in reality, this photo turned out to have been taken not in China. but in Thailand! Even worse, a series of similar false reports subjected our country to numerous criticism and reproach. China’s fame in international society declined to the lowest alley. Though all have passed and all misunderstandings have dissolved now. We know many things from the reports of correspondents, but when those we trust disobey their professional ethics, and their words are not reliable, who can we believe? Finally, practicing professional ethics can provide one with professional satisfaction. Of course, our satisfaction comes from different sources. But one such source must be our profession and happiness obtained in this way, for my part, is the most important for a person. Suppose a person does not have any satisfaction from his work and slacks On professional morality. The desolation and agony such life deals him can be gradual but huge! What a doom he is in! To sum up, professional ethics is not something that we can afford to do without. We each individual should start from here and now, and attach great attention to the problem. If everyone is able to insist on his or her professional ethics, I believe, we’ll have a much better life and world.
