As is depicted in the cartoon, on the four sides of a football field stand four adult children, each of whom acts like a goalkeeper to ward off their helpless father. They all want to escape from their obligations towards their father. As for the reasons accountable for such a contemptible phenomenon, the following are the typical ones. For one thing, with the pace of life speeding up, adult children are overwhelmed by mountains of work. Busy schedules become a perfect excuse for them to shrink from filial responsibility, leaving their weak and helpless parents unattended. For another, owing to different values and outlooks on life, the gap between parents and children yawns so wide, which also contributes to the present situation. For whatever reason, this issue has become increasingly serious in China. Moral education does work, but don’t expect this to happen soon. Therefore, the best policy is to take punitive actions against elder abuse. Moreover, the authorities must seek more suitable approaches to elderly care in view of a rapidly aging population. Only through the combined efforts of the whole society can the senior citizens live in comfort in their old age.
