In the picture, the young boy is laughing at the scholar’s illiteracy about Internet slang, while the scholar tries to prove with his dictionary that it is unacceptable to coin words and phrases in this way. Clearly, there is a generation gap between them in terms of language usage. There are many reasons why generation gap exists in modem society, but the following are more illustrating. Initially, the rapid development of Chinese economy has been accompanied with a corresponding lack of understanding between parents and their children. Because the pace of modern life has become faster and faster, both the parents and their children do not have time to exchange ideas, even if they are living under the same roof. On the other hand, more and more children seek individuality as they grow up. They prefer glittering disco and rock-and-roll music. Some of them even coin their slang language to prove their identity. What is worse, the parents are not willing to learn these new things, hence misunderstanding exists between the parents and their children. To bridge this so-called generation gap, both parents and children should make efforts. The children should respect their seniors.
