答案 Changes of Family Patterns in China The past ten years witnessed changes taking place in average family structure in China. During this decade the divorce rates have been dramatically soaring in most Chinese families, where the majority of children are the only-child, the apple in their parents’ eyes. Even more striking is a sharp increase in juvenile delinquencies. Some long-held notions about family, marriage or divorce, and even the values as regards child education—all these are being curiously challenged. It is obvious that the set of diagrams cannot be easily separated. Few social developments would have a greater effect on the change of family structures than people’s changed attitudes towards sex, love or happiness. That may account for the ascending divorce rates because a family as a social institution no longer denotes a nest for comfort or a bond for responsibility. As a marriage breaks down, a child must fall into financial and emotional troubles. Suddenly exposed to the failure of a marriage, the child is likely to be overcome by some bad influences, and even worse, misguided to commit some misdeeds. To sum up, the tendency of juvenile delinquencies would not be curbed if children failed to enjoy the comfort of family life. Lasting emotional support of children is of great significance, as sociologists suggest that a family should be the cell of a society and the importance of its stability cannot be too much emphasized.
