Interviewer: What do you write? Story books? Plays?
Pat: Just articles for newspapers.
Interviewer: What are you working on now?
Pat: I’ve just finished a piece of background music.
Interviewer: Background music? Oh, like the music they’re playing here in the restaurant?
Pat: Yes. 【D7】______... in restaurants, airports, supermarkets, chain stores and department stores. It’s supposed to put you in a good mood.
Interviewer: I’m not sure I like that idea.
Pat: 【D8】______Companies pay millions of dollars every year for background music. It’s supposed to give you a better feeling about yourself and the people around you.
Interviewer: Now that I think about it, I can’t remember when there wasn’t background music in restaurants and stores.
Pat: 【D9】______Actually, it all started during World War II when some factories had their own music band to keep workers happy and calm. Now, of course, different kinds of music are played at different time during the day. They play faster music at ten in the morning than at eight because workers seem to be slower then.
Interviewer: What about restaurants? Do they play the same music for dinner and lunch?
Pat: 【D10】______, but I do know that hamburger places play fast music. When they started playing faster music, they found that a customer spent only seventeen minutes eating like mad. The time was twenty-two minutes before that. You see, 5 minutes faster merely by a change of background music.
Interviewer: Interesting. So they can prevent customers from staying too long and can have more people coming in and out to buy hamburgers.
